Overview
This article explains how to create and edit shifts in Shiftlab. Shift creation is the foundation of building your schedule. You can set shift times, add breaks, include notes, and define shift types.
When to Use This
Use shift creation and editing when:
Building a schedule for any employee.
Adjusting start or end times.
Adding or modifying breaks.
Assigning shift types, including PTO.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Create a New Shift
Go to the schedule view.
Select any open area for the employee who needs a shift.
Shifts cannot be created in the past.
In the Shift Creation Dialog, configure:
Start time
End time
Breaks
Notes
Shift type (e.g., Regular, PTO)
Select Save to create the shift.
Note: PTO shifts do not count toward scheduled hours and do not appear on the labor chart.

Shift Creation Dialog: The window used to enter shift details.
Shift Type: Categorizes the shift (Regular, PTO, etc.).
PTO Shift: A shift that does not count toward total hours or labor projections.
Breaks: Required or optional time segments away from work during the shift.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
I cannot create a shift in a time block. Why?
Shifts cannot be created in the past. Ensure you are selecting a future date.
My PTO shift is not showing in the labor chart. Is this expected?
Yes. PTO shifts are excluded from total hours and projections.
My changes are not saving. What should I do?
Verify that you selected Save after making edits.
Why can’t I edit a shift?
You may not have permission, or the schedule may be locked after approval.
